Not just Covid cases, fatalities due to the disease are also rising in the district.

Six persons succumbing to the virus today, the highest single-day toll so far, is an indication of how the virus is gripping the district.

Till August 31, the number of deaths in Panchkula was 20. In the past two weeks, 27 patients died of Covid, taking the toll to 47. Among them, 16 were aged 60 or above. A majority of the victims had underlying medical conditions or comorbidities.

Even though health officials have time and again claimed that their efforts have been concentrated on preventing deaths among the high-risk population, the average number of fatalities is steadily rising in the district.

Civil Surgeon Jasjeet Kaur said, "The spike in Covid toll is due to many old patients with severe comorbidities reporting late to the hospital."

"To monitor patients in home isolation, we have decided to rope in health teams which can be in regular touch with them. Many patients ignore symptoms, assuming these to be non-serious. By the time they come to the hospital, it's too late. Now, every patient under home isolation will be checked on 4th, 7th and 10th day of testing positive. This will help us to prevent deaths," she added.
