MLA for judicial probe into scholarship scam

Chandigarh: Demanding a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court into the Post-Matric SC Scholarship Scam, Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira said the probe conducted by the Chief Secretary was an eyewash. In a letter to Governor VP Singh Badnore, Khaira said Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, along with his blue-eyed officials, were responsible for the scam. He said the Chief Secretary had concluded that the minister was not at fault and blamed unknown officials working under him. TNS

Brick-kiln owner booked for abetment to suicide

Faridkot: A day after four members of a family ended their lives in Kaler village of Faridkot, the police today registered an abetment to suicide case against a brick-kiln owner in Bathinda. The police registered the case under Section 306 of IPC after the brother of the deceased blamed the brick-kiln owner for the suicide of Dharampal, his wife and two children. The charred bodies of Dharampal (45), his wife Seema (35), daughter Monica (15) and Hitesh (11) were found in a room of their house on Saturday morning. Dharampal was working as an accountant at a brick-kiln in Kaler village of Faridkot and belonged to Sikar district of Rajasthan. TNS

Jobless teachers to burn Chief Minister's effigy

Sangrur: During a meeting here, jobless teachers who have cleared B.Ed and TET announced a state-level protest in front of CM Capt Amarinder Singh's residence on October 25. "After a state-level protest in Patiala, we will burn an effigy of CM Capt Amarinder Singh for his failure in creating job opportunities for us," said Kulwant Longowal, district president of TET-Bed pass unemployed teachers' union. Sub-Inspector arrested for taking bribe

Barnala: The police have arrested a Sub-Inspector (SI) posted at Bathinda for allegedly helping a drug accused after taking money from him. Barnala SSP Sandeep Goel said the police had registered a case on July 13 under the NDPS Act and till date total 10 persons had been arrested. "We have arrested SI Surjit Singh posted at Bathinda as during probe it has come to light that he had been helping an accused after taking money," said the SSP. TNS

100-ft-high Tricolour unveiled in Ferozepur

Ferozepur: To honour the supreme sacrifices of martyrs, a Tricolour hoisted on a 100-ft-high flagpole was unveiled in Ferozepur near Barki Memorial, 11 km from the Indo-Pak joint checkpost. The project was conceived by MLA Parminder Singh Pinki to instil the spirit nationalism among the youth. Pinki said the flag was a tribute to heroes of the freedom struggle. OC

Six killed in road mishaps near Ropar

Ropar: Six persons were killed in two road mishaps on the Nawanshahr road on Saturday. The police said a car going towards Chandigarh rammed into a truck near the Rayat Bahra college. Of the five car occupants, three died on the spot while two suffered injuries. In another mishap, Navjot Singh of Bahhwan village and Harwinder Singh and Sanjiv Kumar, of Majra Jattan village, were killed on the spot when their bike collided with a tractor-trailer near Kathgarh.
