Heritage theft: More suspects identified

Sarfaraj, a carpenter whose arrest led to the recovery

of 20 heritage chairs stolen from Panjab University, has revealed the names of

suspects involved in the theft and smuggling of heritage items.

The police are hopeful that the information will help them recover more heritage items stolen from the city. Police officials said the other suspects had been identified and would be arrested soon.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspects have links with antique dealers in Mumbai, which is being probed further.

"More heritage items, including chairs stolen from the PU, are expected to be recovered," said a police official. A total of 48 heritage chairs were stolen from the sociology department of the PU between November 1 and 3.

The police investigation had led to the arrest of Sarfaraj, a Baltana resident, while he was carrying two stolen chairs. His interrogation led to the recovery of 18 chairs from the forest area in Dhanas.
