The administration received 771 applications for temporary licences to sell firecrackers in Mohali district this year, witnessing a decline of around 30 per cent as compared to last year. According to information, the administration had received 1,026 applications last year.

770 applicants found eligible for draw

Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan said of the 771 applications, only 770 applicants were found eligible for the draw. As many as 497 applications were received for 18 licences in Mohali and Banur, 54 for eight licences in Nayagaon and Kurali and 220 applications for 18 licences in the Lalru and Zirakpur areas.

Firecracker dealers have shown lesser interest in getting temporary licences this year in the view of the pandemic. They fear that people will not come in a large number to purchase crackers this year.

Wholesale firecracker dealers at the Kurali market here claimed that the sale of firecrackers is likely to dip by nearly 70 to 75 per cent this season.

Balwinder Singh, president, Kurali Firecracker Dealers' Association, said people were scared due to the pandemic. He had never seen such a situation in his 52-year tenure as a dealer. There was a complete slump in the market.

The administration today issued 44 temporary licences to sell firecrackers in the district. The draw was today held in the presence of a committee formed by Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan.

Dayalan said of the 771 applications, only 770 applicants were found eligible for the draw. As many as 497 applications were received for 18 licences in Mohali and Banur, 54 for eight licences in Nayagaon and Kurali and 220 applications for 18 licences in the Lalru and Zirakpur areas.

Dayalan said the administration had fixed 12 sites for the sale of firecrackers. Permission would not be granted to sell crackers at any other place.
