Patiala Sunday market open invitation to Covid

The Sunday market at Chhoti Baradari in Patiala today witnessed hundreds of people coming to buy clothes and other commodities.

The implementation of the Covid-19 guidelines is apparently a matter of the past as visitors to the market were found gathering in large groups without wearing a face masks.

In view of a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases, the state government had recently released fresh guidelines for the implementation of night curfew from December 1 and directed complete utilisation of 25,500 daily RT-PCR testing capacity.

Meanwhile, the Sunday market is also an inconvenience for office-goers in the area as Covid threat looms large.

Krishan Budhwar, a visitor to the Choti Baradari, said: "People have gathered at the market in a large number. They can easily contract infection. The market is an open invitation to Covid-19."

Another office-goer in the area said: "The area becomes congested as people gather in a large number at the Sunday market. It should rather not be allowed to function here due to lack of space during."

Municipal Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur said the corporation had made efforts to maintain social distancing and thus, a team would be sent to the location to ensure that people were wearing a masks. She said the MC could not keep people out of business as all markets have been allowed to function and added: "We are contemplating shifting the Sunday market to the new rehri market."
