Cops extorted Rs12K each from 8 liquor vends, says owner

The liquor contractor on whose complaint police personnel have been booked on a charge of extortion, has alleged that he owns eight vends in the city and cops used to extort Rs12,000 from every vend.

The liquor contractor, in his complaint, has alleged that the suspects, who introduced themselves as crime branch sleuths, used to extort money on a monthly basis.

The police said the CCTV footage provided by the complainant was hazy. They had an idea of the suspects seen in the footage, which was being scrutinized, the police said.

A case of extortion and under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered in this regard at the Sector 39 police station.

Meanwhile, an investigation on similar complaints received from other city-based liquor contractors has been initiated. "We are verifying the evidence based on which further action will be taken," said another police official.
