Rajpura, December 9

The Excise Department has initiated a probe into whether the illegal liquor manufactured at a Rajpura factory was being sold at authorised government vends with “hand-in-glove role of liquor contractors”.

Patiala SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal has placed Rajpura City SHO Balwinder Singh under suspension, while a show-cause notice was issued to the SP (D), DSP Rajpura, DSP (D) and CIA in charge Rahul Kaushal.

A case under Sections 420, 465, 468,471 of IPC, and Sections 61, 78(2), 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered against accused Dipesh and Karaj Singh.

Sources said a tanker of the extra neutral alcohol (ENA) (20,000 litres), 43 cases of illegal country-made liquor (with labelling of Punjab Rasila Santra), labels, corks and sealing machine were recovered from the manufacturing-unit-cum-godown.

“The arrested accused Dipesh was out on bail two months back in a similar case registered against him in June in Ghanaur,” they said.

A senior police officer said Dipesh allegedly got in direct touch with truck drivers shifting ENA to and from distilleries and started producing Punjab medium liquor brands to make hefty profits. “The information that two government liquor contractors helped him sell his daily produce within no time is being verified,” he said.
