Former Mayor Kulwant Singh’s election office ‘attacked’

Mohali, January 24

High drama prevailed outside former Mayor Kulwant Singh's Azad Group election office in Sector 79 this afternoon when a group of people holding a farmers' agitation flag objected to a "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" symbol on his party's banner.

A scuffle ensued between the two groups with some of the persons brandishing kirpans and sticks. No one was injured in the melee, but the Kulwant Singh-led group alleged that it was a murderous attack on them with revolvers, kirpans and sticks.

Addressing a press conference in the evening, Kulwant and former councillors Parvinder Singh Sohana and Sukhdev Singh Patwari alleged that the attack on their office and workers was carried out by men of Congress minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra and SAD leader Charanjit Singh Brar.

Sohana and Kulwant alleged that Jagtar Singh Billa, son of an SAD candidate for the Kharar MC poll, and former YAD leader Sukhwinder Singh Chhindi were also involved in the attack.

A complaint had been lodged with the Election Commission and the Mohali SSP regarding the attack. Sohana SHO Bhagwant Singh said the police had registered a case under Sections 323 and 452 against four unknown persons at the Sohana police station. SAD senior vice-president and former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra and Sukhbir Badal's political adviser Charanjit Singh Brar termed the allegations baseless.

Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, whose younger brother Amarjeet Singh Sidhu (Ward No. 10) is one of the probable candidates for the post of Mayor, said the former Mayor was blaming them as he had not done any developmental work in the past five years. — TNS
