Chandigarh, January 11
The local Municipal Corporation today got the first prize in the 30th National Energy Conservation Awards-2020 during a programme held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
The award was received by Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, and KK Yadav, Municipal Commissioner, through virtual presence, from RK Singh, Minister of State for Power and New Renewable Energy.
Yadav said with the aim of reducing its energy footprint and cut down on electricity costs, the MC replaced all 48,524 street lights with energy-efficient LED lights in the city. The new lights saved the city approx. 13.02 million units of energy annually and reduced power bills from Rs 14 crore annually to Rs 8 crore.
The MC has also installed roof top solar plants on its buildings that generate 8 MW and earn the civic body Rs 2.35 crore yearly, he added. — TNS
