Chandigarh, January 28

A day after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) allowed reopening of swimming pools for general public across the nation, the UT Sports Department has decided to take permission from the competent authority before starting the process of allotting memberships.

The department has eight swimming pools in the city. However, during winters, only one — Sector 23 all-weather pool — remained open for general public. All facilities were closed since March last year due to the imposition of the lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic.

However, earlier this month, the Sector 23 pool was opened only for professional swimmers.

"We will put the case before the competent authority before taking a decision," said Tejdeep Singh Saini, Director, Sports, UT.

Sources said the department was waiting to receive the SOPs from the government before starting the membership process. "The SOPs are a must before throwing the pools open to the general public," said one of the sources.

The facility might open for the general public in February- mid or during the first week of March.

"The Sector 23 facility gets a good response in any weather as the water is maintained at body temperature. Those enthusiastic about swimming attend sessions even in winters. Also, before taking any decision, the department has to decide on fee, which is usually charged for an entire session," added the source.

On January 27, the MHA issued ordered to open swimming pools for all across the nation under revised SOPs to be issued by Ministry of Youth Affairs amp; Sports in consultation with the MHA.
