Chandigarh, February 9

The Punjab Government has given the go-ahead for setting up polling booths in the state for conducting Senate elections, almost a week after Panjab University (PU) sent a reminder to the governments of six states.

According to a circular issued by the Special Secretary (Punjab), Higher Education, the government has given the PU permission to choose/set up polling booths in various colleges of the state (Punjab) on the condition of following all Covid-19 guidelines and protocols issued by the Centre and the Punjab Government. "After consideration, the PU has been given the go-ahead to make polling booths at different colleges of the state on the condition of following all Covid-19 guidelines issued from time to time by the Government of India and the Punjab Government," states the circular.

The circular also mentions that there has already been a delay in conducting the PU Senate elections. Therefore, the process should start at the earliest.

The polling booths of different constituencies of the PU Senate are schedule to be set up in Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. Last month, the PU had informed the office of the Vice-President of India, Chancellor of PU, that the process of Senate elections has been initiated by seeking permission from the six state governments. Mostly, the polling booths of the registered graduate constituencies are set up in different states.

The polls were earlier scheduled to start in August last year, but these were postponed twice due to the pandemic. The Senate is a 91-member apex governing body of the university. The four-year term of the previous Senate ended on October 31 last year. The term of the Syndicate also ended on December 31. Its members are elected from among the senators.
